On March 27, 2024, NEXCEL convened the Project Planning Workshop on Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composite Materials in Beijing. Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE), Prof. Yue Qingrui from Beijing University of Science and Technology, Mr. Zhi Xiao, Chairman of China Building Materials Academy (CBMA), and over 10 top experts from universities, producers, designers, and end users in the FRP sector were presented, and the workshop was chaired by Prof. Yao Yan, Chairlady of NEXCEL Technical Advisory Committee (TAC).
At the beginning, Mr. Zhi Xiao warmly welcomed Prof. Yue Qingrui and all the experts. He addressed that NEXCEL has funded 53 innovation projects, with 16 of them focusing on FRP and achieving remarkable accomplishments. Mr. Zhi Xiao hoped that the experts would discuss the most important and pressing technical/market challenges in the FRP area in China, and provide valuable recommendations to improve the application technology system of the FRP industry.
Prof. Yue Qingrui stated that the work carried out by NEXCEL currently has made significant contributions to the industry. He pointed out that FRP composites materials will be a beneficial supplement to conventional civil engineering materials such as concrete and steel in the future, particularly in complex environments like marine engineering, and FRP materials show excellent performance advantages and application prospects. He presented the technical recommendations for the current stage of FRP materials and the application technology system.
During the meeting, Dr. Li Juan, Program Director of NEXCEL, introduced the NEXCEL funded FRP projects, existing research and standards. Prof. Feng Peng from Tsinghua University, Prof. Xue Weichen from Tongji University, Prof. Xian Guijun from Harbin Institute of Technology, Prof. Li Rong from Central Research Institute of Building and Construction, Prof. Wang Xin from Southeast University, Prof. Liu Xiaogang from University of Science and Technology Beijing, Dr. Bai Jie from China Construction Eighth Engineering Division, Mr. Chen Qiufei, VP of Zhongfu Shenying Carbon Fiber Co., Mr. Zhuo Yang, Director of China Communications Construction Company, Mr. Li Ming, VP of OCEANPOWER New Material Technology, Mr. Zhao Bin, Technical Manager of Dextra Building Products (Guangdong), and Mr. Zhuo Jing, Chairman of Chongqing Dali Cable Technology, have discussed in depth from various aspects such as production, design, research, and application, combined with their professional backgrounds, thoroughly analyzed the technical challenges in the performance, standards, specifications, and engineering design of FRP materials in engineering applications, and put forward practical and reasonable recommendations.
Through this workshop, new and existing challenges in the application of FRP composites were identified and well-targeted recommendations were provided. NEXCEL will gather and leverage the recommendations, as well as commit to the improvement of the application system for FRP composites.
