NEXCEL Forum on Special Mortars & Concrete was successfully held with nearly 7,000 viewers on October 20. Co-chaired by Professor Wang Ling of China Building Materials Academy and Dr. Li Juan, Program Director of NEXCEL, this forum invited four well-known experts from the special mortars and concrete sector to share the latest research, engineering innovations of high ductility Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) and application of polymer materials for repair and reinforcement in high-speed railways.
In a keynote speech on ‘Preparation, Properties and Application of ECC’. Professor Yang Yingzi of Harbin Institute of Technology introduced the differences in all aspects between ECC and traditional brittle cement-based materials, focusing on recent research findings of ECC preparation, dynamic and static mechanical properties and durability in China and around the world. The material provides more possibilities for sustainable civil engineering based on her own research achievements.
Professor Yu Jiangtao of Tongji University gave a keynote speech on ‘Study on Non-reinforcement Construction with ECC’. From the aspects of crisis and demand of today's society, Professor Yu introduced how to break the combination of steel and concrete and how to make concrete without steel in building and construction. He elaborated the concept through non-reinforcement construction and structural reinforcement of ECC and its engineering demonstrations.
Professor Deng Mingke of Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, addressed seismic security problems of masonry walls in rural areas in his speech on ‘Research and Engineering Application of Structural Reinforcement with ECC’. He introduced ECC reinforcement technology developed by his team, and engineering applications in reinforcement of masonry and concrete structures.
Wang Jian, Vice President of CNBM Zhongyan Technology Co., Ltd, gave a speech on ‘Polymer Material for Repair and Reinforcement in High-speed Railways’. He briefly introduced the history of China's high-speed railways, and performance requirements of polymer materials in repair and reinforcement. The application of polymer material solves technical problems of grouting material for repair and safeguard safe travel of high-speed railways.
In the online salon after the four speeches, the experts interacted with the audience on the topics of ECC design, standards, requirements for additives, ECC's impact on low-carbon and emission reduction, and cost saving for engineering.
