On January 11, 2022, the Inauguration Ceremony of “Nonmetallic Excellence and Innovation Center for Building Materials” (NEXCEL) jointly founded by China National Building Material Group Co., Ltd. (CNBM) and Saudi Aramco (Aramco) was successfully held in Beijing. Ahmad A. Al Sa’adi (presented by video), Senior Vice President of Aramco, and Zhan Yanjing, Vice President of CNBM, attended the Ceremony and delivered keynote speeches. Ma Zhenzhu, Chairman and President of China Building Materials Academy (CBMA), participated the Ceremony on behalf of the operating arm of NEXCEL.

NEXCEL was jointly founded by Aramco, the world’s largest energy and chemical manufacturer, and CNBM, the world’s largest building materials manufacturer and service provider. Both parties are committed to accelerating the application of nonmetallic materials in the field of building construction, laying out the future with nonmetallic innovative technologies, and creating more sustainable building solutions. Compared with conventional materials used in construction nonmetallic materials, including petroleum-based advanced composite materials, are more durable with lower maintenance costs, and will play an important role in promoting low-carbon infrastructure in China.

Ahmad A. Al Sa’adi expressed his warm congratulations on the inauguration of NEXCEL via a video link from Saudi Arabia. He said that over the past two decades, Aramco has been developing and applying nonmetallic materials in pipelines and construction projects, and has accumulated rich experiences. This time, the strategic cooperation between CNBM and Aramco has infinite potential. It will definitely boost the development and application of nonmetallic materials, improve sustainability, and create significant value for human beings and the entire society.

In the keynote speech, Zhan Yanjing raised three hopes for NEXCEL to build an international platform, lead the innovation and development of the building materials field:
  • The first is to build an international open R&D platform. Guided by the development strategies of CNBM and Aramco, NEXCEL should align, integrate and serve the national strategies of China and Saudi Arabia, focus on the main business advantages of both parties, and carry out joint research and development.

  • The second is to build an international achievement transformation platform NEXCEL should be established in a mutually beneficial and win-win industrial chain and supply chain cooperation system, and accelerate the transformation of scientific and technological achievements into productivity.

  • The third is to build an international demonstration application platform NEXCEL should lead international development with innovation capability share the forefront and excellent technology in the industry, enhance the independent innovation capabilities of both parties, and promote the radiation of innovation results to more countries along the “Belt and Road”.

A five-minute promotional video for the “Journey of NEXCEL” brilliantly presented the history of the founding of NEXCEL and the milestone significance of this strategic cooperation. Khalid Y. Al-Qahtani, Chief Engineer of Aramco, said that NEXCEL is the first nonmetallic materials innovation center jointly established by Aramco and top-tier local partner in Asia after the one in the United States. Anwar Al Hejazi, Aramco Asia President, mentioned that in the past 30 years, Aramco and its Chinese partners have gone far beyond crude oil trade and expanded to many fields such as technology R&D. Aramco is delighted that the partnerships in the field of nonmetallic materials have achieved fruitful results, and the establishment of NEXCEL will further consolidate our cooperation in related fields.

Ma Zhenzhu said that CBMA will provide strong technical supports, create an open and innovative premium platform to lead green and low-carbon development in the future. Hou Diyang, Deputy General Manager of CBMA, said that NEXCEL will vigorously promote petroleum-based advanced composite materials to play a more important role in infrastructure construction.
As the Program Director of NEXCEL, Dr. Li Juan from CBMA introduced the vision, mission and operation structure of NEXCEL. As both parties pressed the blue luminous columns together, the participants witnessed the official launch of NEXCEL, which opened a new era of win-win cooperation between the two parties.

The cross-disciplinary powerful alliance between CNBM and Aramco will go hand in hand in the field of nonmetallic materials, give full play to their extensive resources and technical strength, write a new chapter of cooperation, breed fruitful new achievements and promote material innovation to a brand new level. NEXCEL will contribute to the implementation of energy conservation and emission reduction, help the strategic alignments of China’s “Dual-Carbon Goal 2060” and Saudi Arabia’s “Vision 2030”, and make greater contributions to global sustainable development.

Anwar Al Hejazi, Aramco Asia President, Qahtani, China Country Manager of Aramco, Mohammad Qahtani, Head of Engineering and Technical Services Department of Aramco Asia, Liu Jun, Deputy General Manager of Strategic Cooperation Department of CNBM, Feng Jun, Chief Accountant of CBMA, and A total of 50 representatives from Aramco Asia and CBMA attended the meeting.
