On November 9, 2023, the 4th NEXCEL Series Forum on Waterproofing Materials was hosted by NEXCEL. Three renowned experts and one NEXCEL Project Principal Investigator were invited to deliver presentations on high durable waterproof material for photovoltaic roofing, KEE membrane roofing, thermoplastic polyolefin waterproofing sheets and polymer self-adhesive film pre-laid waterproofing membrane. This forum was chaired by Prof. Zhang Yong, Chief Engineer of China National Building Waterproof Association and member of NEXCEL Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), and Dr. Li Juan, Program Director of NEXCEL. This forum attracted active participation of almost 3000 viewers.
Prof. Zhu Zhiyuan, Chief Engineer of China Building Material Test & Certification Group Suzhou, delivered a speech entitled “High durable waterproof material for photovoltaic roofing”. Prof. Zhu introduced the different types of photovoltaic roofs and their corresponding waterproof structures and requirements. He pointed out that it is necessary to use asphalt-based and high polymer waterproof membrane with a service life longer than that of the photovoltaic components for extending waterproof life of photovoltaic roofs under the dual carbon target.
Mr. Chen Yushan, Vice President of Star Construction Systems, gave a presentation on “Design and construction of Ketone Ethylene Ester (KEE) membrane roofing”. He focused on the definition and structural design of KEE roofing membrane, highlighting its outstanding performance such as flame retardancy, chemical corrosion resistance, etc. Additionally, he also provided some project cases for KEE roofing membrane.
Mr. Hu Quanchao, R&D Manager of Keshun Waterproof Technology and Project Principal Investigator of NEXCEL, presented a report entitled "Development and engineering demonstration for thermoplastic polyolefin waterproofing sheets with high flame retardancy and long service life". Mr. Hu provided a detailed introduction to thermoplastic polyolefin waterproofing sheets, including chemical resistance, UV aging resistance, and heat aging resistance properties, and the key techniques of flame retardancy, oxidation resistance, and durability.
Ms. Xiong Yuqin from State Key Laboratory of Special Function Waterproof Materials delivered a speech entitled “Research on the durability of polymer self-adhesive film pre-laid waterproofing membrane”. She gave a detailed explanation of the factors causing aging in polymer waterproofing membranes and highlighted the reliability of the adhesive layer as the main factor affecting the service life of the polymer self-adhesive film.
In the final Salon/ Q&A session, experts had a discussion on the innovation of the future research and development of polymer waterproofing materials.The Forum was successfully concluded in a lively academic discussion.
