Interview with Project Leader of NEXCEL 2022 Funded Projects--Lv Guocheng
Time: 2022/09/15  Publisher: oiginal  Views:

Prof. Lv Guocheng, project leader of “Preparation and properties of petroleum coke porous carbon/paraffin composite phase change materials”, doctoral supervisor and Professor with China University of Geosciences (Beijing), has been engaged in the research of functional mineral materials, and participated in various key technology projects at state, ministry and municipal level. He published more than 160 academic papers in the field of mineral materials and obtained 14 authorized patents.

As a Ph.D training program, the team consists of a doctoral supervisor and a Ph.D student. The doctoral supervisor is mainly responsible for giving ideas of experiments and directions. The Ph.D student is responsible for experiment execution of and data summary.

Based on crystal structure and chemistry, the project team focuses on  comprehensive utilization of mineral resources as well as research and development of mineral-based  functional materials, using natural minerals to solve  leakage problem of phase change materials for application in controlling building temperature and power peak.

Prof. Lv Guocheng addressed that this project aims to use petroleum coke to encapsulate hydrocarbon-based phase change materials, mainly paraffin, to prepare petroleum coke porous carbon/paraffin composite phase change materials. The research on the problem of stability and secondary leakage is to provide a basis for commercial application of phase change materials.

According to current market price, the price of commercial phase change microcapsule materials is 1,200 RMB/kg. Compared with such materials, the materials used in this project can effectively reduce the cost by 5 times, which can significantly save material costs and generate considerable economic benefits.

In the context of the dual-carbon goal, it is necessary to solve  imbalance problem between energy supply and demand in order to improve energy efficiency. By using phase change materials that absorb heat through melting and release heat through solidifying, it can bring a large amount of energy conversion within a small temperature range,  and ultimately realize proper utilization of thermal energy. The outcomes of this project are efficient in energy conservation and consumption reduction of buildings, and will promote green and low-carbon development in the building sector.

About China University of Geosciences (Beijing)

China University of Geosciences,Beijing (CUGB) is a national key university of the People’s Republic of China, administered directly by the Ministry of Education, As one of the first 33 universities in China to pilot graduate schools, CUGB was listed in China's "Project 211", a national endeavor aiming at strengthening top institutions of higher learning as a priority for the 21st century, and later listed in "Project 985", which at the time was the country's most significant educational project for funding world-class universities. Then in 2017, it was chosen into China’s "Double World Class" project as a Category-A University.
