Abstract:

Evaluating the fatigue performance of steel members strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) is of great significance for formulating maintenance strategies and making full use of materials. Current analytical models are mainly developed for fully covered CFRP strengthening method without considering different mechanisms at each stage. In this paper, an analytical model considering different stages of crack propagation was proposed to predict the fatigue performance of center cracked steel plates strengthened with partially covered CFRP strips. The strengthening effects of CFRP strips were numerically analyzed based on the extended finite element model (XFEM) calibrated by test data. The validity of the analytical model was checked by several sets of test data and numerical simulations. The results show that the proposed analysis model can reasonably predict the fatigue life of center cracked steel plates strengthened with partially covered CFRP strips. This study may provide a reference for the application of the partially covered CFRP fatigue strengthening method in engineering structures.
