World’s First All-carbon-fiber Spoked Wheel Cable Structure

On November 21, the world's first all-carbon-fiber spoked wheel cable structure was successfully applied to Jinan Yaoqiang Airport. This is also the first comprehensive application of carbon fiber parallel rod cables as the main load-bearing component in large-span roof.

To expand the application scenarios of carbon fiber in building and construction sector, the project team from China Construction Eighth Engineering Division successfully overcame key technology of tension-bending composite load-bearing carbon fiber cables. They effectively solved three technical problems of the coupling load-bearing of carbon fiber cables under bending and tension, the refined design of cable support nodes, and the long-term reliable service. As a result, they formed a carbon fiber cable lightweight large-span structure construction solution with independent intellectual property.

​In the application at Jinan Yaoqiang Airport, compared with the traditional steel cable solution, the all-carbon-fiber wheel-spoke cable structure demonstrated significant advantages:
 

  • Cable strength increased by 67.7%
  • Maximum cable weight reduction by 85.6%


Additionally, the excellent corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance of carbon fiber cables effectively address durability issues of steel cables, significantly enhancing the overall life cycle economic benefits of the roof. 


The successful application of carbon fiber cables at Jinan Yaoqiang Airport marks a major breakthrough for carbon fiber composites in large-span  structures in China, and provides innovative practical cases for green and low-carbon construction.
