NEXCEL Forum on FRPs for Civil Engineering held online

On November 10, NEXCEL Forum on FRPs for Civil Engineering was successfully held. Chaired by Dr. LI Juan, Program Director of NEXCEL, and Prof. FENG Peng of Tsinghua University and TAC member of NEXCEL, this forum was participated by more than 4,000 viewers. Five renowned experts from the field of civil engineering composite materials were invited to share the latest research progress on FRPs for Civil Engineering, FRP bridge, cable and the application of FRP for carbon reduction to enhance urban resilience.

Firstly, Prof. XIAN Guijun from Harbin Institute of Technology delivered a keynote report on "New Fiber Composite Materials for Civil Engineering". Prof. XIAN introduced the background of FRP, the problems in the application process, presented the goal of developing new FRP and developing new FRP by combining hybrid fibers and thermoplastic matrix to meet the high performance requirements for engineering structural applications.

Prof. WANG Xin from Southeast University delivered a keynote report on "FRP Cable and Large Span Lightweight Bridge Structure". Prof. WANG addressed in detail FRP cable types, performance characteristics, anchoring systems and cable structures based on the current situation of FRP cable industry, focusing on the anchoring technology of large tonnage FRP cables and the prediction of multi-scale performance of cables, and finally listed some typical foreign applications of FRP cable bridges and predicted the possible future development direction of FRP cables.

Prof. FANG Hai from Nanjing Tech University shared a report on "Research and development on overall performance improvement of large bridges by applying FRP". Based on the fact that FRP can solve the problem of corrosion deterioration of traditional structural materials, the project team has carried out work on lightweight composite bridge deck panels, main cable composite material protection system, bridge composite material anti-collision system, and anti-corrosion composite material combination pier column, which has improved the structural safety, durability and protection of large bridges and demonstrated a large number of engineering applications.

Prof. YU Qianqian of Tongji University shared the recent experimental progress of the group in CFRP-steel interface bonding performance. Through the CFRP-steel interface bonding test design and bonding test result, it was concluded the bond-slip intrinsic relationship once CFRP-steel interface bonding fatigue, and the establishment of a CFRP-steel interface bond-slip degradation model, which laid a theoretical foundation for repairing and reinforcing damaged steel structures.

Prof. FENG Peng from Tsinghua University shared a report on "High Toughness and Low Carbon of Engineering Structures with FRP". By citing solid fiber composite structures, Prof. FENG introduced the potential of composite materials to achieve low carbon engineering structure and urban resilience. Prof. FENG compared three typical engineering structures with the carbon emission calculation method and pointed out the advantages of FRP structure to reduce carbon emission.

In the final salon session, experts expressed their views on thermoplastic FRP cost, FRP fire-resistance, durability, product standardization and certification, etc. The Forum was successfully concluded in a heated academic discussion. In this Forum, domestic scholars further understood the historical development and research status of FRPs for civil engineering, familiarized with different application scenarios of FRPs, and broadened the academic visions.
