The 8th China-Europe Workshop on Functional Pavement, hosted by Harbin Institute of Technology, was successfully held in Weihai, China, from August 16 to 17, 2025. The theme of the conference was "Safe, Intelligent and Resilient Pavements of the Future". The conference attracted nearly 300 participants from 53 leading universities from over 20 countries and regions to discuss the latest research findings in the field of pavement engineering.

Mr. Yang Bin from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Principal Investigator of NEXCEL 2024 Ph.D. project 'Preventive Maintenance Material Design and Multiscale Characterization of its Working Mechanism for Porous Asphalt Pavement', attended the conference anddelivered a presentation titled "Multi-scale Investigation of the Working Mechanism of Preventive Maintenance Materials for Porous Asphalt Pavements".

To clarify the multi-scale action mechanism of preventive maintenance materials in porous asphalt (PA) pavements, the effects of emulsified asphalt on the mechanical properties and functional characteristics of damaged PA were systematically investigated at the macroscale, and the application parameters of emulsified asphalt for surface treatment and maintenance were preliminarily determined. At the microscale, the spatial distribution of emulsified asphalt residues in PA and the coating efficiency between new and old asphalt were qualitatively and quantitatively investigated with the help of an industrial CT scanner and a self-proposed image processing procedure. At the microscale, the tracer technology was used to in-situ observe the potential diffusion behavior of newly added emulsified asphalt residues in old asphalt within PA over a long period of time using the SEM/EDS.

This study preliminarily confirmed the preventive maintenance effect of emulsified asphalt as a surface treatment and maintenance material on damaged porous asphalt pavements, revealed the maintenance mechanism of emulsified asphalt in damaged PA, provided theoretical support for the subsequent further optimization and design of this preventive maintenance material.
