2024 NEXCEL Forum on FRP Rebars and Cables was Held

On November 14, 2024, 2024 NEXCEL Forum on FRP Rebars and Cables was successfully held. This forum was chaired by Prof. XIAN Guijun of Harbin Institute of Technology and three well-known experts delivered insightful presentations and shared their research and application experience. This forum attracted over 4200 viewers.

First of all, Mr. Oscar Salazar, Engineering Consultant from Saudi Aramco, gave a presentation entitled "FRP rebars and Saudi Aramco experience", introducing the composition, types, characteristics, standards and advantages of GFRP rebars. He also introduced the applications of GFRP rebars in Jazan Flood Channel, SPARK Logistics and Dry Port, Dhahran Channel in Saudi. He pointed out that "GFRP rebar is a mature product which is widely deployed in Saudi Aramco."

Prof. WANG Xin from Southeast University gave a presentation entitled "Progress of basalt FRP bars/grids and its innovative application". Based on the current demand and situation of infrastructure, he introduced the research of FRP, and highlighted its innovative applications in bridges, tunnels, buildings, roads, slope supports and cutting-edge engineering. He pointed out that "a series of technologies for strengthening existing structures with FRP have been widely used to achieve service life extension, span enhancement and intelligent monitoring."

Mr. WANG Zhiwei, Vice President from ZFCC-Cable of CNBM, gave a presentation entitled "Properties and application of CFRP rebars in civil engineering". He introduced the advantages and disadvantages of CFRP in civil engineering, as well as the manufacturing process, performance improvement and typical engineering applications of rebar, cable and intelligent CFRP cable, and also addressed the challenges of CFRP development.

In the salon/Q&A session, Prof. XIAN Guijun summarized the three excellent presentations, and discussed with the speakers and audience on FRP matrix and anchoring, advantages and disadvantages of BFRP, transportation and cost of CFRP cables. This forum was successfully concluded in a lively discussion.
