From April 16th to 17th, 2024, the 1st RILEM International Conference on Mineral Carbonation for Cement And Concrete (1st MC3 2024), hosted by Aachen University was successfully held in Aachen, Germany. The conference attracted over 160 representatives from 25 countries. Prof. Ling Tung-Chai from Hunan University, the principal investigator of the NEXCEL 2023 Ph.D. project titled "Beneficial use of DPCR to prepare CO2-ready-mix cement-based materials," and Ms. Luo Shuang, the Ph.D. candidate, attended the conference and delivered a presentation entitled " Improving the Mechanical Properties of Portland Cement via Blended CO2-intermixed High Belite Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cement.

Desulfurized petroleum coke residue (DPCR) is a refinery by-product rich in calcium sulfate and calcium oxide and it is often used in making aerated concrete. To improve DPCR utilization, the project team injected CO2 during the mixing process, greatly enhancing DPCR's reactivity. Treated DPCR can replace 10% of ordinary Portland cement, resulting in an 80-100% increase in compressive strength at 1 day and a 26-36% increase at 28 days.
