Introduction
 
 
Recently, the International Commission on Glass Annual Meeting 2023 (ICG 2023) hosted by the Chinese Ceramic Society was held in Hangzhou, China. With the theme "Glass for a Better Future", over 400 domestic and foreign experts, scholars, graduate students and technical personnel in the field of glass attended the event. Hemin Zhou, Ph.D student of the NEXCEL 2022 Ph.D project, entitled "High–modulus Elinvar glass fiber reinforce resin matrix composite engineering components ", attended the conference, and delivered a presentation entitled "Mixed alkali-zinc effects on thermo-mechanical properties in borosilicate glasses".

In the report, Prof. Haizheng Tao's team substituted alkali metal ions with high-field-strength Zn2+ ions, employing the mixed modifier effect (MME) to comprehensively control the thermal and mechanical properties of glass. Zinc ion substitution significantly improved both Young's modulus and shear modulus of borosilicate glass by over 20%. This study highlights zinc ion substitution as an efficient approach to elevate the modulus of oxide glass and glass fibers, laying the foundation for the future preparation of high modulus glass fiber-reinforced resin-based composite materials.
