Introduction

From December 6th to 8th, 2023, the 23rd China Waterproofing Technology and Market Conference took place in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The conference aimed to explore the industry opportunities under the current policy and guide waterproofing professionals to seize new rules, new futures, and new opportunities. Hosted by the China Building Waterproofing Association (CWA) and jointly sponsored by NEXCEL and Zhejiang Building Waterproofing Association, etc., the conference was attended by over 900 participants from research, testing, design and consulting institutions, universities, and firms.

This conference focused on "seizing new opportunities, facing new challenges, creating new growth, and embarking on a new journey of standard-led high-quality industry development." It featured five major topics including "sector situation, urban renewal, home retail, commercial building roofs, and general waterproofing specifications," encompassing a total of 21 invited reports.

Mr. Zhu Dongqing, Secretary General of CWA, delivered a keynote speech titled "Current Status and Trends of the Construction Waterproofing Industry," where he analyzed the current development, industry opportunities, transformation and upgrading considerations, and several industry hot topics. He interpreted the "General code for waterproofing of building and municipal engineering" and its significance for the high-quality development of the waterproofing industry.

Mr. Zhang Yong, Chief Engineer of CWA, and TAC member of NEXCEL, delivered an invited presentation titled "Discussion on several issues in the implementation of general code for waterproofing of building and municipal engineering," providing a reevaluation of the basic concepts of the general waterproofing rules and a comprehensive discussion on common issues.

Mr. Zhu Zhiyuan, Chief Engineer of China Building Material Test & Certification Group Suzhou, and TC member of NEXCEL, delivered an invited speech titled "Polymer Modified Bituminous Waterproofing Membrane Standard under the General Code," where he briefly outlined the historical evolution of the polymer modified bituminous waterproofing membrane standard, related international standards, and proposed interpretations for the revision of the standards based on the relevant requirements of GB 55030 and the demands of product engineering applications.

Dr. Gao Ruijun, Technical Manager of NEXCEL, presented an invited report titled "Solutions for polyolefin waterproofing sheets with long service life" detailing the research progress on flame retardancy and durability of polyolefin waterproofing sheets in NEXCEL 2023 projects. He emphasized the commitment of NEXCEL to promoting the transformation and application of nonmetallic materials, including polymer construction waterproofing materials.

In addition to these presentations, Senior Researcher Qin Hong from Renmin University of China, Secretary-General Bai Yunfeng of the Green Building Materials Product Certification Technical Committee, Honorary President Jiang Chaofeng of the China National Materials Storage and Transportation Association, and Chief Building Materials Analyst Bao Yanxin from Guotai Junan Securities analyzed various aspects including the operational form of the construction waterproofing industry, market status and prospects, and urban renewal.

Representatives from various companies including Mr. Zhang Yongdong, Vice President of DeGao (Guangzhou) Building Materials, Professor Wang Wanjun of the China Academy of Building Research, Director Wang Hailong of the Waterproofing and Protection Research Center of China Academy of Building Research, Technical Director Wang Xiaofeng of Dow Chemical (China) Investment, Strategic Planning Consultant Zhang Yong of Oriental Yuhong Building Renovation Group, and Vice President Li Gang of Glodon Company Limited primarily analyzed the opportunities and challenges in the waterproofing industry and the field of external wall waterproofing under the new general waterproofing standards.

Furthermore, General Manager Wu Jingde of Shandong Sida Building System Engineering, Deputy General Manager Pan Yang of Gudewei Broadcasting and Television Building Materials, General Manager Zheng Zhao of Guangdong Xintao New Materials Technology, Deputy General Manager Li Huican of Fujian Southern Road Machinery, Director Zheng Wei of Shanghai Weixing New Materials, and Director Zhu Jiajun of JD Retail Building Materials Business Unit shared the latest research developments and comprehensive solutions in the commercial and residential building roof systems, home decor retail, and material research.

This conference served as a grand gathering for the think tanks from government, financial institutions, associations, and industry firms. The successful convening of the conference further enhanced exchanges and cooperation among peers in this field.
