Introduction

On October 26, 2023, the 2nd NEXCEL Series Forum on Pavement Materials was hosted by NEXCEL. Three renowned experts were invited to deliver insightful reports on high performance asphalt, hot in-place recycling of waste asphalt pavement and noise reduction asphalt pavement. This forum was chaired by Prof. Huang Songchang, former Chief Engineer of Research Institute of Highway Ministry of Transport (RIOH) and NEXCEL Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) member, as well as Dr. Li Juan, Program Director of NEXCEL and attracted active participation of 3000 viewers.

Professor Yu Jiangmiao from South China University of Technology delivered a speech entitled "Technology and application of ultra thin friction course based on high performance asphalt binder". Prof. Yu emphasized, “a high asphalt aggregate ratio and a thick asphalt film are crucial approaches to enhance the crack resistance of asphalt friction courses. He introduced the high-toughness ultra-thin asphalt friction course with excellent performance in resisting cracks, leakage and noise reduction, and the thickness is ranging from merely 0.8cm to 2.0cm.

Ms. Zeng Wei from RIOH as the project Principal Investigator of NEXCEL, and presented a report entitled "Application technology and engineering demonstration of hot in-place recycling of waste asphalt pavement". She explained that through hydrocarbon-based warm mix agents and hot-in-place recycling technology, it achieved a reduction in paving temperature by 20-30°C and energy-saving by 15-25%. This resulted in the successful implementation of clean in-place recycling in Shanghai-Shaanxi Expressway and the Baomao Expressway.

Prof. Li Mingliang from RIOH gave a report entitled "Noise reduction asphalt pavement design methods and materials". Prof. Li provided a detailed introduction to technical innovations in the structural design, material selection, noise reduction effect prediction and durability of low-noise asphalt pavement. He also listed several demonstrations of noise reduction asphalt pavement in highways and long tunnels.

In the final Salon/ Q&A session, experts interacted with online scholars around issues such as reducing energy consumption by minimizing the amount of materials, using high viscosity asphalt for low-noise pavement, emulsion breaking in high viscosity asphalt, etc. The Forum was successfully concluded in a lively academic discussion.
