Introduction

From September 24 to 27, 2023, the 3rd International Conference on Sustainable Building Materials (ICSBM 2023) took place in Wuhan, China. This conference, jointly organized by Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan University, and Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, aimed to provide a platform for experts and scholars in the field of sustainable building materials to exchange the latest research and academic achievements, as well as to promote international collaboration and communication in the field. Ms. Luo Shuang, Ph.D student of the NEXCEL 2023 Ph.D project, titled "Beneficial Use of Desulfurized Petrol Coke Residue to Prepare CO2-Ready-Mix Cement-Based Materials", attended the conference and delivered a presentation entitled "Enhancing Mechanical Properties of Portland Cement with Blending CO2-Intermixed High Belite Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cement."

To enhance the mechanical performance of CO2-ready-mixed cement-based materials, Professor Tung-Chai Ling's team introduced CO2-intermixed high belite calcium sulfoaluminate cement into ordinary Portland cement paste. This process was intended to further stimulate the reactivity of ordinary Portland cement.

The CO2-intermixed high belite calcium sulfoaluminate cement effectively promoted the reactions of tricalcium silicate (C3S) and tricalcium aluminate (C3A) in the ordinary Portland cement paste, resulting in the formation of more hydration products. As a result, the compressive strength of the blended cement paste increased by 5.8-34.6% compared to traditional preparation methods and pure ordinary Portland cement paste.

During the conference, Ms. Luo provided a detailed explanation of the activation mechanism of carbonated high belite calcium sulfoaluminate cement, the fresh and hardened properties of the product, and outlined the next steps in their research plan, which received unanimous approval from the attending researchers.
