Introduction
From September 9th to 11th, 2023, the 18th General Assembly of China Building Materials Federation Concrete Admixture Branch (CCAA) was held in Xinxiang, Henan. Themed "Admixtures Facilitating Green and Low-carbon Innovation in Concrete", the conference attracted over 600 attendees. Prof. Yao Yan, Chairlady of NEXCEL Technical Advisory Committee(TAC) and Chairlady of CCAA, NEXCEL TAC members, Prof. Wang Ling, Secretary General of CCAA, Prof. Sun Zhenping from Tongji University, as well as Prof. Kong Xiangming from Tsinghua University, member of NEXCEL Technical Committee(TC), delivered keynote speeches. In addition, three key project team members of NEXCEL, Prof. Wang Zhendi, Senior Engineer Xue Tong and Senior Engineer Li Xiaoning, presented their reports during the session.
Prof. Yao Yan delivered a keynote speech on "Technical Approaches to Carbon Neutrality in Cement Concrete." She provide a detail overview of the current state of China's cement industry and elaborated on the main technical approaches for carbon reduction, carbon capture and utilization, carbon trading-related technology researches, as well as the establishment of a green and low-carbon manufacturing standard system. She emphasized: “Achieving carbon peak in cement sector will promote the green and low-carbon development of the building materials industry.”
Prof. Wang Ling gave a presentation titled "Formulation and Revision of Concrete Admixture Standard." Based on recent changes in admixture production and market value in China, Prof. Wang introduced China's cement admixture standard system, the revision progress of key admixture standards, and recommendations for standardization of admixture sector. She stated, “The current standard system for cement admixtures still requires refinement and improvement” and pointed out the importance of formulating standards for admixture raw materials and safety in production.
Prof. Sun Zhenping delivered a keynote speech titled “Investigation on the Adaptability of Alkali-free Liquid Flash-setting Admixture and it’s Application on Site”. He introduced the preparation and performance research of two types of alkali-free liquid accelerators: suspension type and emulsion type. By exploring the impact of cement, admixtures, and engineering application factors on the adaptability of alkali-free accelerators, he proposed optimized improvement measures for adjusting the accelerator composition according to different raw materials and engineering conditions. These measures enable concrete to quickly solidify, harden, and gain strength within a short period, eliminating the negative effects on the later strength and durability caused by rapid setting and hardening.
Prof. Kong Xiangming delivered a keynote speech on “Research on Cement Concrete Admixtures” , focusing on the rheological control of cement slurry by admixtures, the impact of admixtures on cement hydration, and the aggregation behavior of polycarboxylate molecules. He also discussed the application of various additives, such as water-soluble polymers, polymer emulsions, polymeric hydrogels, and polymer fibers in concrete. Prof. Kong emphasized that these admixtures significantly enhance the strength, toughness, crack resistance, self-healing ability, and sustainability of concrete.
Prof. Wang Zhen Di delivered a speech titled “Technological Opportunities for the Cement Admixture Industry under Dual Carbon Strategy.” To achieve maximum carbon emissions reduction in the cement and concrete sector, Prof. Wang provided several technical solutions, including the development of high compatibility water reducers, biomass-based water reducers and polycarboxylate superplasticizers, as well as improvements of concrete durability and service life.
Dr. Xue Tong presented a report on "Research and Application of Novel Polyether macromonomer and Ultra-highly Dispersing Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer". Dr. Xue placed emphasis on the preparation process, product performance, and pilot production of the self-developed ultra-highly dispersing polycarboxylate superplasticizer. Futhermore, their team developed low-carbon mix proportion design and application techniques for C30 and C50 concrete.
Dr. Li Xiaoning gave a report on "Research and application of admixtures for (ready-mixed fluid) solidified soil". Commencing with an exploration of the influence patterns and solidification mechanism of admixtures in (ready-mixed fluid) solidified soil, she focused on a specialized dispersant for admixtures and elucidated the mechanism of interaction between the dispersant and the soil. Additionally, she showcased the achievements that were applied in the backfilling demonstration at Changping Life Science Park in Beijing.
The conference highlighted the significance of technological innovation and further strengthened the exchanges within the industry. It encouraged enterprises to enhance their research capabilities in developing innovative admixture products and technologies, thereby providing valuable support to the industry’s pursuit of a green, low-carbon and sustainable future.
