A new type of external frame beam for high-rise buildings was designed and demonstrated based on pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite profiles in Qingdao, Shandong province, China. All GFRP materials were provided by Nanjing Spare Composite Yizheng Co., Ltd., the structural design was completed by Beijing University of Technology and Xiong'an Vanke Green R & D Co., Ltd., and the demonstration construction by Shenyang Huisi Installation Engineering Co., Ltd.

The GFRP frame beam was manufactured through customized pultrusion process with sectional geometry being 800×300 mm, and all GFRP materials consist of E-glass fiber and unsaturated polyester resin. The fiber content is about 70%.

Compared with the steel frame beam, the self-weight of the pultruded GFRP frame beam is reduced by about 75%. The greatly reduced weight of structure is found to reduce the capacity requirement of construction machinery, alleviate the space requirements of construction site, improve the construction efficiency, and save a good amount of costs related to labor and time. In the end, the plan of GFRP structure saved the construction-related cost of about 5 million CNY for this project.

Pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites is characterized as high strength and stiffness-to-weight ratios, as well as good corrosion resistance, showing strong potential in the field of civil engineering worldwide.
